Is a wedding in Portugal possible for German citizens?
Yes, a wedding in Portugal is entirely possible for German citizens without any difficulty.
Which documents are required?
For the civil marriage ceremony you will need:
- Identity card or passport, valid for at least another 6 months
- International birth certificate in the long version, showing the names of both parents
- International certificate of no impediment to marriage for both German fiancés (issued by your local registry office)
- If divorced or widowed, additionally: international marriage certificate (extract from the marriage register)
What costs should I expect?
The official costs break down roughly as follows:
- Registry office approx. €120
- Cost of the certificate
- Travel expenses of the registrar
- Permit from the harbour authority approx. €220 (only applies to beach weddings)
How does the registration work?
The registration is not at all straightforward, which is why it is advisable to engage a wedding planner who can take care of the paperwork. This requires a so-called Procuração – a power of attorney.
When should I start planning?
You should begin planning one and a half years before your intended wedding date. This leaves enough time to secure your preferred date with popular service providers.
